Cropping fills the frame and loses the edges; padding keeps every pixel and spends part of the frame on black. Both are shown as a percentage before you commit, which is the whole decision in one number.
Enlarging is the invisible cost
Fitting a small photograph to a large frame does not add detail, it stretches what is there. The tool says how far it is enlarging and names the largest size your image fills natively, so a soft render is a choice rather than a surprise.

Is the frame fitter free?
Yes, and there is no account. It crops and resizes in your browser — nothing is generated and no request is made, so it costs us nothing to serve. Generating video from the frame afterwards is separate and billed.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read through a local browser URL, drawn to a canvas and handed back as a download. It is never sent to us or to anyone else, nothing is stored, and closing the tab is all the cleanup there is.
Which shape should I choose?
Whichever one the clip is for: 16:9 reads as a screen and 9:16 as a phone, and a vertical clip cropped from a landscape photograph loses most of the frame. Decide the destination first, because it decides the shape and the shape decides the crop.
Should I crop or pad?
Crop unless the whole picture is the point. A cropped frame fills the video and looks like it was shot for it; a padded one keeps every pixel but spends part of every second on black bars, which reads as a photograph in a video rather than a video. Padding earns its place for artwork with a fixed border, or a screenshot where an edge carries meaning.
Which size should I pick?
The largest one your image fills without being enlarged — the tool names it for you. Sizes run 360p, 720p, 1080p, 4k. Choosing above that does not add detail; it makes a softer frame and, if you render at that size, a more expensive clip.
What happens if my image is too small?
It is enlarged to reach the frame, and the tool tells you by how much. Nothing is invented in the process — an enlarged photograph is the same photograph with softer edges — so a small source is a reason to pick a smaller frame rather than a reason to worry.
