What one hour of timecode actually costs

The rates that end in a fraction are not the numbers their names suggest. 23.976 is 24000/1001, 29.97 is 30000/1001, and 59.94 is 60000/1001 — each one a tenth of a percent slower than the whole number beside it. Every figure below is computed from those exact fractions, which is why a column that should read one hour sometimes does not.

Read the fourth column as the honest answer to how long an hour of timecode lasts. At 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 it is exactly an hour. At the three fractional rates the counter falls 3.6 seconds behind the clock every hour, so a two-hour programme cut against non-drop timecode runs 7.2 seconds longer than its own counter claims. Drop-frame counting, which exists only at 29.97 and 59.94, closes that gap to about four thousandths of a second.

Drop-frame

Drop-frame does not drop frames

It drops frame numbers. At 29.97 the labels 00 and 01 are skipped at the top of every minute except every tenth, so 00:00:59;29 is followed by 00:01:00;02 while 00:09:59;29 is followed by 00:10:00;00. Fifty-four minutes an hour lose two labels each, and those 108 labels are exactly the correction the counter needs. No picture is discarded and no edit moves. At 59.94 the same rule skips four labels instead of two.

The semicolon before the frames field is the convention that marks a drop-frame timecode. This calculator refuses a timecode that names a skipped label: 00:03:00;01 at 29.97 drop-frame is not a frame that exists, and a tool that quietly accepts it is answering a question about footage nobody shot. Turn the counting mode off and the same digits become a valid non-drop timecode pointing at a different frame.

Drop-frame is a correction, not a cure. It over-corrects slightly inside each ten-minute block and finishes an hour about 3.6 thousandths of a second fast, roughly 86 milliseconds across a full day. Non-drop is 3.6 seconds out over the same hour.

File size

Bitrate times duration, and nothing else

File size is total bitrate multiplied by running time. Ten minutes at 8 Mbps of video with a 128 kbps audio track carries 8,128 kilobits every second, so 600 seconds produce 609.6 MB. The container adds a fraction of a percent for its index and metadata, and a variable-bitrate encode averages the target you gave it rather than hitting it exactly. Leave a couple of percent of headroom against a hard cap and the arithmetic holds.

Two habits make it wrong. The first is forgetting the audio: 192 kbps of stereo across a 90-minute programme is 129.6 MB on its own. The second is mixing units. This page uses MB = 1,000,000 bytes and GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, the decimal convention that drive capacities, upload limits and delivery specs use, and prints the binary MiB and GiB beside them. A file your operating system calls 4.38 GiB is the same 4.7 GB file — neither number is wrong.

Every row adds a 128 kbps audio track on top of the video bitrate, and uses MB = 1,000,000 bytes. The figures come from the same function the calculator above runs, so the table and the tool cannot disagree.

Frame rate

Two different jobs share one name

Conforming keeps every frame and changes the playback rate. Take an hour of 24p — 86,400 frames — and run it at 25, and it finishes in 57 minutes and 36 seconds. That is the PAL speedup: 4.17 percent faster, with the audio riding up about 0.71 of a semitone unless it is pitch-corrected separately.

Resampling keeps the duration and changes the frame count. The same hour needs 90,000 frames at 25, so 3,600 frames have to come from somewhere — duplicated, blended or interpolated. Which one you want depends on whether the delivery spec fixes the running time or the frame count. The calculator reports both, with the drift and the pitch shift, so the choice is deliberate rather than whatever the software defaulted to.

Script timing

A word count is a duration

A narrator reads somewhere between 110 and 170 words a minute. Slow and deliberate sits near 110, an ordinary explainer voice near 140, a brisk promo read near 170. Three hundred words is therefore anything from 1 minute 46 seconds to 2 minutes 44 seconds — a full minute of difference on the same page of script, which is why the calculator shows all three paces at once instead of pretending there is one answer.

Count on the slower end for anything technical, anything with a number that has to land, or a read that needs to breathe between shots. Count on the faster end for a promo with hard cuts. Then read it aloud once against a stopwatch, because the only pace that matters is the one the person at the microphone actually uses.

Before you trust the numbers

Is this video calculator free?

Yes. All four calculators run in your browser, need no account, and have no usage limit. Nothing you type is sent to a server, so a script you paste into the timer never leaves the page.

What is drop-frame timecode?

A counting scheme for 29.97 and 59.94 that skips frame numbers — never picture — at the start of every minute except every tenth, so the timecode label stays within a frame of the wall clock. A semicolon before the frames field marks it: 01:00:00;00 rather than 01:00:00:00.

Should I use drop-frame or non-drop?

Broadcast delivery at 29.97 or 59.94 is usually drop-frame, because the number on the counter has to be the real running time. Everything else — 23.976, 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 — has no drop-frame form at all. If you are unsure, match whatever the source media reports and stay in that mode for the whole job.

Which frame rates does the calculator handle?

Do you use MB = 1,000,000 bytes or 1,048,576?

One million. Sizes are shown in decimal MB and GB, the convention that drive capacities, upload limits and delivery specs use, with the binary MiB and GiB values printed alongside so you can match whichever your file manager reports. The two differ by about 5 percent at megabyte scale and 7 percent at gigabyte scale, which is enough to fail a hard size cap.

How accurate is the speech time estimate?

It is a word count divided by a reading pace, so it is exactly as good as the pace you pick. The three presets — 110, 140 and 170 words a minute — bracket most narration, and the table shows all three so you see the spread rather than one confident-looking number. Time your own read once and use whichever pace matches it.
