21:9 aspect ratio: pixel sizes, cinematic ratios and when to use ultrawide video
21:9 is the ultrawide frame: 21 units wide for every 9 tall, roughly 2.33 to 1. It is the shape of ultrawide monitors (2560 x 1080 and 3440 x 1440) and the closest consumer label for the wide "scope" frame of cinema, which is 2.39:1. People reach for it because it reads as film: a 21:9 shot says "movie" before anything happens in it. This guide gives the 21:9 pixel sizes, explains how it relates to the real cinema ratios, says where ultrawide video plays well and where it wastes the screen, and covers how to make it without cropping a 16:9 frame.
What is the 21:9 aspect ratio?
21:9 is an ultrawide frame about 2.33 times as wide as it is tall. The common sizes are 2560 x 1080 and 3440 x 1440 on monitors, and 1920 x 823 or 3840 x 1646 when 2.33:1 video is delivered inside a standard HD or 4K width.
The label is a marketing convenience. 21 divided by 9 is 2.33, but the monitors sold as 21:9 are 2.37:1 (2560 x 1080) or 2.39:1 (3440 x 1440), and the cinema standard it borrows from is 2.39:1. For practical purposes, "21:9" means "about 2.35 to 2.4 wide", and a true 2.39:1 film on a 2560 x 1080 monitor shows only a thin sliver of bars.
What are the 21:9 resolutions?
| Size | Ratio | Where you meet it |
|---|---|---|
| 2560 x 1080 | 2.37:1 | Entry ultrawide monitors (UW-FHD) |
| 3440 x 1440 | 2.39:1 | Common ultrawide monitors (UW-QHD) |
| 5120 x 2160 | 2.37:1 | 5K2K ultrawide monitors |
| 1920 x 823 | 2.33:1 | 21:9 video inside an HD width |
| 1920 x 803 | 2.39:1 | Scope video inside an HD width |
| 3840 x 1646 | 2.33:1 | 21:9 video inside a UHD width |
| 4096 x 1716 | 2.39:1 | Scope in a DCI 4K cinema container |
To work out any other size, divide the width by the ratio. The aspect ratio calculator does it for any width or height you type.
What is the most cinematic aspect ratio?
There are two theatrical standards, and "cinematic" usually means the wider one:
- 2.39:1 ("scope"), often still called 2.35:1 or cinemascope. Most action, science fiction and epic films are scope. It is historically produced with anamorphic lenses, which squeeze a wide image onto a narrower sensor or film frame, hence "anamorphic aspect ratio".
- 1.85:1 ("flat"), used for much drama and comedy. It is only a little wider than 16:9 and feels less like "a movie" to most viewers.
21:9 sits right next to 2.39:1, which is why it is the everyday stand-in. When a brief says "make it look cinematic", a 21:9 frame, a slow camera move and a controlled colour palette do more than any filter.
Where does 21:9 video play well?
- Websites and landing-page heroes, where a wide, short banner of motion sits above the fold.
- YouTube in full screen on ultrawide monitors, and on 16:9 screens it plays letterboxed, which audiences read as film.
- Trailers, title sequences and short films that want the language of cinema.
- Presentations and event screens built for wide LED walls.
Where it wastes the screen: phones held upright. A 21:9 video on a 9:16 feed occupies a thin stripe in the middle of the display. For Reels, Shorts and TikTok, render 9:16; for feeds, 1:1 or 3:4. Our video aspect ratios guide lists every platform's frame.
How do you make a 21:9 video?
You have two ways to get there:
- Crop 16:9. Take a 1920 x 1080 frame and cut bars from the top and bottom to 1920 x 823. It works if the shot was framed for it; if not, you lose heads and horizons. You also throw away about a quarter of the pixels.
- Render it natively. Compose for the wide frame from the start, so the subject and the horizon sit where the frame expects them.
PrismPoster's Premium video engine renders 21:9 natively (its full list of frames is 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 21:9, 3:4) at 480p, 720p, 1080p, 4K, in single takes of up to 30 seconds. The Standard engine renders 16:9, 9:16. Choose 21:9 in the Video studio or on the AI video generator page before you render; the frame is part of the composition, not a crop applied afterwards.
How do you compose for 21:9?
- Use the width. Put the subject on a third and give the other two thirds to the place: landscape, a room, a crowd.
- Keep headroom tight. A wide frame is short, so close-ups crop at the forehead, as they do in scope films.
- Move sideways. Lateral tracking shots and slow pans show off the width better than push-ins. A oner through a wide space is the classic use.
- Mind the captions. Subtitles on 21:9 sit inside the picture, not in the bars, unless you deliver letterboxed inside a 16:9 file.
Frequently Asked Questions
What resolution is 21:9?
The common 21:9 sizes are 2560 x 1080 and 3440 x 1440 on monitors, and 1920 x 823 or 3840 x 1646 for 2.33:1 video delivered in HD or UHD widths.
Is 21:9 the same as 2.39:1?
Close but not identical. 21:9 is 2.33:1 by arithmetic, the monitors sold as 21:9 are 2.37:1 or 2.39:1, and 2.39:1 is the cinema "scope" standard.
What is the anamorphic aspect ratio?
Anamorphic usually refers to 2.39:1, the widescreen format historically shot with anamorphic lenses that squeeze a wide image onto a narrower frame and unsqueeze it on projection.
Can AI generate 21:9 video?
Yes. PrismPoster's Premium engine renders 21:9 natively at up to 4K, in single takes of up to 30 seconds.
Does YouTube support 21:9 video?
Yes. YouTube plays it letterboxed inside its 16:9 player on normal screens and wider on ultrawide displays; upload it without adding your own black bars.
