AI short film maker: how to make a short film with AI, from script to export

The PrismPoster teamOctober 6, 20265 min read

An AI film maker does not make a film on its own. What it does is replace the camera, the location and much of the crew for a single person with a story: you write, board and direct, and the engine renders the shots. The result lives or dies on the same things as any short film, which are the script, the continuity of the characters, the rhythm of the edit and the sound. This guide walks through a workflow that works for a two- to five-minute short, using PrismPoster's Storyboard, Video, Music and editor tools, and is honest about where AI filmmaking still struggles.

Can you make a short film with AI?

Yes. A short film made with AI is written and edited like any other short; the engine renders the shots. The practical limits are continuity (characters and places drifting between shots), shot length per render, and dialogue lip-sync, and each has a workaround.

The workflow below uses one tool for each stage so nothing has to be exported and re-imported: a storyboard to plan, the Video studio to render, the Music studio for the score, and the timeline editor to cut and export.

Step 1: Write a script that suits the medium

Short films that work with AI lean on image and sound rather than long dialogue. Three guidelines:

  • Keep dialogue light. Voice-over and on-screen text are easier to control than several characters talking in close-up.
  • Keep the cast small. Every extra character is another face to keep consistent across shots.
  • Write in scenes and beats. Each scene becomes a set of shots; each shot becomes a prompt.

Step 2: Storyboard every shot

Turn the script into a shot list with a frame, a camera move and a length for each shot. The AI storyboard guide covers this, and the free shot list template is a quick start. Decide the frame shape here: 21:9 reads as cinema on the desktop (see the 21:9 aspect ratio guide), 16:9 plays everywhere, and 9:16 suits a film meant for phones.

Step 3: Lock the characters before rendering

Continuity is the problem AI films most often fail on. Before rendering a single shot, build a reference set for each character: several images of the same face and costume from different angles. Our character sheets guide shows how. Attach that set to every shot the character appears in. On PrismPoster's Premium engine a render takes up to 30 reference images, which leaves room for the character, the location and a style frame together.

A real, identifiable person can only appear through the consented likeness setup. Cast fictional characters, or yourself through that setup.

Step 4: Render long takes where the scene allows

Every cut between separate renders is a chance for a costume, a prop or the light to change. Fewer, longer shots mean fewer of those chances. The Premium engine renders one continuous take of up to 30 seconds, directed in timed beats, so a walk through a house, a chase down a street or a slow reveal can be a single render rather than five stitched shots. Our guide to the oner explains how to plan one.

Use the Standard engine's 4, 6, 8, 10-second shots for inserts, reactions and cutaways, which are short by nature and cheaper to iterate. Both engines live in the same Video studio, and the AI video generator page compares them side by side.

Step 5: Build sound as carefully as picture

Both engines render sound with the picture, so footsteps, rain and room tone come with the shot. On Premium you can attach reference tracks to steer that sound. For the score, write a track in the Music studio for the mood of the film and trim it to the cut on the timeline, rather than looping a stock cue; our guide to background music for videos covers matching music to scenes.

Step 6: Edit on the timeline

Assemble the shots on the timeline editor, trim each to its strongest seconds, lay the score under the sound, and add titles and captions. A shot that ends too early can be continued from its last frame. The editor puts no length cap on the export, so a five-minute film is an editing job, not a generation limit.

What does an AI short film cost?

Budget in seconds of rendered footage, and expect to render two to three times what ends up in the cut. Premium bills per second: 18 credits at 480p, 40 at 720p, 50 at 1080p and 70 at 4K, with no base fee. A full 30-second take at 720p is 1200 credits. The cheapest workflow is to draft every shot at 480p, lock the cut, and re-render only the final shots at a higher rung. Any credit pack purchase unlocks Premium.

Where does AI filmmaking still struggle?

  • Lip-sync on dialogue. Close-up dialogue is the weakest area. Voice-over, off-screen dialogue and wide shots avoid it.
  • Hands and fine text. Plan shots so they do not depend on legible signs or detailed hand work.
  • Long scenes with many people. Crowds are fine as background; many named characters interacting is hard to keep consistent.
  • Disclosure. Festivals and platforms increasingly ask about AI use. Say so plainly; our creator's guide to AI content labelling covers the rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI film maker for short films?

Look for long single takes, reference images for character consistency, sound rendered with the picture, and an editor in the same place. PrismPoster combines a Premium engine with takes of up to 30 seconds, a Music studio and a timeline editor with no export length cap.

Can AI generate a whole short film from one prompt?

Not a good one. Tools that promise a film from one prompt produce a sequence of loosely related clips. A film needs a script, a shot list and an edit, and AI renders the shots inside that plan.

How do I keep characters consistent in an AI film?

Build a reference set for each character and attach it to every shot, and use longer takes so there are fewer cuts where drift can appear.

How long can an AI short film be?

As long as you edit it. Single renders top out at 30 seconds on Premium; the timeline editor assembles any number of them.

Can I submit an AI short film to festivals?

Many festivals accept AI-assisted films, and some have dedicated categories, but rules vary. Read each festival's rules and disclose AI use on the submission.
