What makes an AI character description work?
One test, applied clause by clause: could a stranger check this against a photograph? "Heavy brow, deep-set eyes" passes. "Mysterious aura" does not. An image model can only place what it can render, so a description has to name traits, not impressions.
A description is also not one document. It has three layers with three different lifespans, and drift usually starts with writing them as one block.

Write the anchor once, paste it unchanged into every prompt, and vary only the third block. That single discipline fixes more drift than any amount of extra adjectives. Which details belong in the identity anchor?
Traits that are visible from any angle, in any light, and cannot be changed by wardrobe or mood. Eight to twelve is the working range.
- Apparent age band, not a number. "Late 30s" renders; "37" does not.
- Face shape — oval, square, long, heart. One word, high leverage.
- Skin tone and texture together. Texture is the stronger anchor: freckles across the nose, sun damage, acne scarring, an even complexion.
- One or two named facial features — a broad flat nose, heavy brows, a strong jaw, thin lips. Two specific ones beat six vague ones.
- Eye colour, once.
- Hair colour, length, and cut. The cut anchors harder than the colour.
- Build and height. Give a number in centimetres; it disciplines the proportions.
- One asymmetry or flaw. A scar through an eyebrow, a gap tooth, a broken nose, a birthmark, heterochromia.
That last item does more work than the rest combined. Image models default to regular, symmetrical faces, which is exactly why those faces blend into one another. A crooked incisor is a fingerprint.
How much detail is too much?
Less than most people assume. A prompt is a fixed budget of attention and every clause competes with every other clause, so a long description does not describe harder — it describes more weakly, across more things. Four habits burn that budget:
Repetition disguised as richness. "Piercing emerald eyes, a jade-green gaze, a striking green stare" is one trait written three times, and it crowds out the jaw you never mentioned.
Contradiction. "Waif-thin yet powerfully built" lets the model choose, and it chooses differently each run. Omission is safer than conflict.
Evaluation instead of description. Stunning, gorgeous, striking, ethereal, otherworldly — these spend words without specifying pixels. So do the quality tags inherited from 2022-era prompting (8k, masterpiece, ultra-detailed), which buy far less than they used to while still pushing your real traits toward the tail of the prompt.
Things the model cannot see. Backstory, job history, star sign, personality type. Personality belongs in the scene layer, translated into something renderable: not "guarded and cynical" but "half-smile, chin slightly down, eyes off-camera".

What does a rewrite actually look like?
Before — a typical character appearance generator output, pasted straight into a prompt:
A stunningly beautiful young woman with an air of mystery, long flowing hair cascading in the wind, piercing emerald eyes that hold ancient secrets, wearing an elegant flowing dress, standing dramatically on a windswept cliff at golden hour, cinematic, ultra detailed, 8k, masterpiece.
Forty-odd words, three of them usable: a young woman, hair length, eye colour. The rest is mood, scene, or quality inflation — and because the scene is welded to the character, the block cannot be reused anywhere else.
After — split into three:
- Anchor: Woman, late 20s, oval face, warm olive skin with dense freckles across the nose and cheeks, narrow straight nose, strong jaw, dark green eyes, shoulder-length auburn hair with a blunt fringe, slim athletic build, 168 cm.
- Styling: olive field jacket over a cream ribbed top, brown leather satchel worn cross-body.
- Scene: on a chalk cliff path at low sun, wind from camera left, three-quarter view, waist-up, neutral expression.
Half as long again, and every added word is one a stranger could check. The first block travels to every future image untouched, the second holds for a whole series, and only the third gets rewritten. A second anchor in the same shape, for someone who is not a young woman with green eyes:

How do you describe a full body character?
Head-and-shoulders descriptions fall apart the moment you ask for a full body, because everything below the collar was never specified. A full body character brief needs four additions.
Silhouette first. What shape is this person at thumbnail size — broad and square, narrow and vertical, top-heavy? A description that produces a recognisable silhouette survives small crops, motion, and back views.
Footwear. Routinely forgotten, and quietly capable of ruining an otherwise good full-body render. Name the shoe.
The back. Most references only ever show a front view, so the model invents the back — and invents it differently every time. Say what is there: a plait, a hood, a coat vent, a rucksack, a bare nape.
Proportion and posture. Height in centimetres plus a build word gives the model something to hold. Posture belongs in the anchor when it is characteristic (stooped, chest-forward, weight habitually on one hip) and in the scene layer when it is situational. Props get one clause each if they matter and nothing if they do not — an unnamed prop changes between generations.
Are random character description generators worth using?
For one job, yes. Tools sold as an AI character description generator or a character appearance generator are usually trait randomisers with a prose writer attached, and they are genuinely good at breaking a blank page, producing combinations you would never have chosen, and naming things you can picture but cannot word — face shapes, hair cuts, the difference between a shawl collar and a notch lapel.
What they are bad at is prompt shape. They write character sheets for fiction, heavy on backstory and mood, because that is what the tabletop and novel-writing audience wants, so most of a typical output is material this article has just told you to cut. How do you turn a description into a reusable character?
Once the anchor block is right, the problem stops being writing and becomes retrieval: getting forty words in verbatim, correctly, in every prompt, for months. That is the job PrismPoster's Character Studio does.

Be exact about the mechanism, because the category oversells it: this is reference conditioning, not a trained model. The catches, in the order you are likely to meet them:
- Designing a character is text and dropdowns only. You cannot upload a photo of a person and turn them into a character here; a likeness of a real human is a separate, consent-backed flow, for reasons set out in what AI likeness consent means. If what you want is a talking presenter rather than a character design, that is the avatar category.
- A saved character is final. There is no rename, no edit, and no regenerate, so settle the name before you generate.
- A name that cannot form a valid tag saves no character. The image still lands; the roster entry does not.
- Characters resolve in the Image and Video studios and the music-video reference panel — not in Storyboard.
- Animating works one way round. Tag the character into a video prompt and the sheet rides along as a reference. Taking the sheet image itself as a source frame for image-to-video is a different route, and on a photoreal design it can trip our real-person safeguards; the tag is the path that behaves.
