Facebook cover photo size in 2026: the Page dimensions Facebook publishes, and the safe area

The PrismPoster teamOctober 14, 20265 min read

Facebook publishes the cover photo dimensions for Pages, and they are stranger than most guides admit: the cover displays at a 16:9 aspect ratio on computers and at 2.4:1 on phones, must be at least 400 pixels wide and 150 tall, and loads fastest as an sRGB JPG that is 851 x 315 pixels and under 100 kilobytes, per Facebook's Page dimensions help page as checked in September 2026 (facebook.com/help/125379114252045). Two different display ratios from one upload means part of the image is always cropped somewhere, so the real question is not "what size" but "where is the area that survives both crops". This guide answers both.

What is the official Facebook Page cover photo size?

Facebook's Page help page states the cover must be at least 400 x 150 pixels, loads fastest as an 851 x 315 sRGB JPG under 100 KB, and displays left-aligned with a full bleed at 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on mobile devices, as of September 2026.

Spec Facebook's figure (checked Sept 2026)
Minimum size 400 pixels wide, 150 pixels tall
Fastest-loading file sRGB JPG, 851 x 315 pixels, under 100 kilobytes
Display on computers Left-aligned, full bleed, 16:9 aspect ratio
Display on phones Left-aligned, full bleed, 2.4:1 aspect ratio
Profile picture overlap Approximately 40 pixels on mobile devices; partially covers the left side of the cover
Format tip PNG for covers that contain a logo or text
Page profile picture 320 x 320 for best quality; displays at 176 x 176 on computers, 196 x 196 on phones; cropped to a circle

This page covers Facebook Pages, the spec Facebook publishes. A personal profile cover displays with its own crops on each device; the safe-area method below works for both, but the numbers in the table are the Page numbers.

Why does one cover need two ratios?

A 16:9 frame is 1.78 times wider than tall; a 2.4:1 frame is 2.4 times wider than tall. Show the same picture in both and either the phone view loses a band from the top and bottom, or the desktop view loses strips at the sides. Facebook anchors the crop to the left ("left aligns with a full bleed"), so the right edge is what disappears when the frame is narrower than the image, and the profile picture then sits over part of the left edge. The consequence for design: the image's important content lives in a horizontal band through the vertical centre, starting a little in from the left edge and ending well before the right edge.

Where is the safe area on a Facebook cover?

Keep logos, faces and text inside the central horizontal band that is visible at 2.4:1, and start them roughly a fifth of the way in from the left, where the profile picture no longer overlaps; anything in the top and bottom bands or hard against either edge is cropped on one device or the other.

For an 851 x 315 upload, 2.4:1 is 851 x 355, taller than the image, so the phone view scales the picture to fill the width and trims height only if the ratio demands it; 16:9 is 851 x 479, taller still. In practice the phone and desktop views both show the whole 851-pixel width scaled to the screen and differ in how much vertical space surrounds the image, with Facebook padding or cropping to its display frame. The practical rule that survives every layout change: place the subject in the middle 60% of the height and the middle 70% of the width, and preview the result at both ratios before uploading. The free aspect ratio resizer and safe-zone preview crops a candidate image to 16:9 and to wider ratios in the browser so you can see what each crop removes.

How do you make a cover photo that stays sharp?

Facebook's fastest-loading recommendation is a small file, 851 x 315 under 100 KB, which is a performance recommendation rather than a quality ceiling. A cover with a logo or text should be a PNG, as Facebook's own page notes, because JPG compression fringes the edges of type. For a photographic cover, export a JPG at quality 85 at 851 x 315 and check that it lands under 100 KB; if it does not, reduce quality before reducing dimensions. Generated artwork should be created at a wide ratio from the start: the AI image generator renders at 16:9, which crops to 2.4:1 with far less loss than a square or portrait image would, and a tighter brand palette for the bars or background comes from the colour palette extractor. Check the exported file's size and colour profile with the image metadata viewer.

What about the profile picture?

Facebook's Page spec asks for a 320 x 320 image, cropped to a circle, displayed at 176 x 176 on computers and 196 x 196 on phones. Keep the logo or face inside the inscribed circle, which loses the corners of the square, and use a PNG for a logo. Because the profile picture overlaps the cover's left side, the two images should share a palette; a cover that is busy behind the circle makes the profile picture hard to read.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a Facebook cover photo in 2026?

For Pages, Facebook states a minimum of 400 x 150 pixels, a fastest-loading size of 851 x 315 as an sRGB JPG under 100 KB, and display ratios of 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on phones, as checked in September 2026.

Why is my Facebook cover photo cropped on mobile?

The phone view displays the cover at 2.4:1, the computer view at 16:9, and both are left-aligned with the profile picture overlapping the left side. Content near the top, bottom or right edge is trimmed on one of the two; keep the subject in the centre band.

Should a Facebook cover be a JPG or a PNG?

Facebook's help page recommends PNG for covers with a logo or text, to keep the edges clean, and notes that an sRGB JPG loads fastest for photographs. Use PNG for graphics and JPG for photos.

What is the Facebook Page profile picture size?

320 x 320 pixels for best quality, per Facebook's Page dimensions page; it displays at 176 x 176 on computers and 196 x 196 on phones and is cropped to a circle.
