Free vocal removers compared: what each free tier lets you keep

The PrismPoster teamNovember 5, 20269 min read

"Free vocal remover" means at least four different things in September 2026, and the difference is what you can keep. Some tools let you download both stems free with no sign-in (PrismPoster's browser tool, BandLab Splitter, vocalremover.org). One lets you separate ten minutes of audio free but only listen to the result — the download is the paid feature (LALAL.AI). One has no free tier at all and sells a single conversion for $6.99 (PhonicMind). Others publish no numbers on their public pages and put the free allowance behind a sign-in (Moises, Media.io). The table below is every limit as written on each vendor's own page, so you can pick by the constraint that matters to you: length of the file, number of stems, format of the result, or whether the file leaves your machine at all.

What "free" hides on a vocal remover

Separation is expensive to run — the model holds the whole song as spectrograms, and a ten-minute stereo file is hundreds of megabytes of floating-point audio before anything is computed. Every vendor pays for that somewhere, and the free tier is shaped by where.

The four levers, in the order they will bite you:

  1. Preview or download. The largest catch on this list. A tool can process your file free and then hold the result behind a paywall. Check the "download" column before the "minutes" column.
  2. Per-file caps. A length cap (6, 10, or 15 minutes) or a size cap (100 MB to 2 GB). Length caps matter for podcasts and live sets; size caps mostly bite WAV uploads.
  3. Stems. Two stems (vocal and instrumental) is the karaoke job. Four or more (drums, bass, guitar, piano) is the practice-and-remix job and is usually where the paid tier starts.
  4. Where the audio goes. Most services upload your file to their servers and process it in a queue. One tool on this list runs the model inside your browser tab instead, so nothing is uploaded and there is no queue — the trade is a model download on first use and a cap set by your tab's memory rather than a plan.

Free vocal removers compared (checked September 2026)

Every cell below was read on the linked page in September 2026. "Not published" means the vendor's public page does not state it, which is itself the answer — plan on the limit being enforced at upload time.

Two things the table makes obvious. First, "10 free minutes" and "free" are not the same offer: LALAL.AI's ten minutes are for judging quality, and the honest way to use them is exactly that — run your hardest file, listen, then decide whether Lite is worth €81 a year for the files you will actually process. Second, the three tools that let you keep the result with no plan attached are the ones with the plainest scope: two stems (ours, vocalremover.org) or four stems with a length cap (BandLab).

Which free vocal remover to use for which job

Karaoke or an acapella from one song, right now. Any of the three no-plan tools. Ours returns WAV stems that add back to the original bit for bit, which matters if you plan to re-mix them; vocalremover.org is the fastest to reach — one page, one button — with no published cap either way; BandLab gives you drums and bass as well if you want to play along.

Practice stems (solo the bass, mute the drums). BandLab Splitter — four stems free, a built-in player with speed and key controls, and a 15-minute cap that covers almost any song.

A long file: a DJ set, a live recording, a podcast bed. Watch the per-file cap. BandLab stops at 15 minutes and 100 MB, our tool at 10 minutes, EaseUS's free tier at 6. Above that you are in paid territory everywhere — LALAL.AI's paid plans accept 2 GB files, and EaseUS Pro accepts 60 minutes.

Audio you cannot upload anywhere. An unreleased master, a client's stems, a recording with someone else's voice in it. Our vocal remover is the one on this list that never sends the file off your machine: the separation model (about 66 MB) downloads into the tab on first use and the audio stays in your browser's memory. That is also why the cap is 10 minutes — the mixture and both stems are held as uncompressed float arrays, and a longer file is a slow way to find out the tab ran out of room. The page says so before you choose a file rather than failing after an upload.

Checking quality before paying for volume. LALAL.AI's Starter is built for this and says so on its own pricing page: "Starter is best for testing the service and checking output quality before committing to a paid plan."

What separation cannot do

A separated stem is a derivative of the song you fed in. Removing the vocals from a commercial track does not clear the composition or the master — the instrumental you get back belongs to the same rights holders as the original, and no vendor's free tier changes that (Media.io is the only page in the table that says anything at all, and it says commercial use "depends on your subscription plan"). Our AI music licensing guide covers what that means for a video you intend to monetise.

If the real goal is an instrumental you are allowed to use — a backing track for a lyric video, a bed under a video, something for a stream — generating one is the cleaner route than stripping one. The Music Studio has an instrumental toggle, so the track never has vocals to remove, a target length from 10 seconds to 6 minutes, and it can split its own generated songs into stems. A song costs 25 credits, and a free account starts with 150 credits and no card — about 3 songs — which our free AI music guide walks through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which vocal remover is completely free with no limit?

None of the eight publishes "no limit" on every axis. The closest are vocalremover.org, which states no cap on its page but reserves its newer algorithm for subscribers, and PrismPoster's browser tool, which has no plan, no sign-in and no song count but caps each file at 10 minutes because the audio is processed in your tab's memory. BandLab Splitter is free with a 15-minute, 100 MB per-song cap. Checked on each vendor's own page in September 2026.

Can I download the result from a free vocal remover?

It depends on the tool, and it is the first column to check. PrismPoster, BandLab Splitter, vocalremover.org and EaseUS (MP3 only) let you download the free result. LALAL.AI's free Starter plan gives result previews only — downloads begin on the paid Lite plan — and PhonicMind sells downloads from its Play plan or as a $6.99 single conversion, as of September 2026.

How long a file can a free vocal remover handle?

The published per-file caps as of September 2026: EaseUS 6 minutes on the free tier, PrismPoster 10 minutes, BandLab Splitter 15 minutes or 100 MB, LALAL.AI 200 MB per upload on Starter (10 minutes of processing in total). vocalremover.org, Moises and Media.io do not publish a per-file cap on their public pages.

Does a vocal remover upload my song to a server?

Most do: LALAL.AI, Moises, BandLab, vocalremover.org, EaseUS, Media.io and PhonicMind all process the file on their own servers, which is why they meter minutes or credits. PrismPoster's vocal remover runs the separation model inside your browser, so the file is never uploaded — the cost is a one-time model download and a 10-minute cap per file.

Is the instrumental from a vocal remover free to use commercially?

Separation does not change who owns the song. The instrumental of a commercial track is still that track, and none of the free tiers above grants rights to it; Media.io is the only vendor page in the table that mentions commercial use at all, and it ties it to the subscription plan. For a backing track you can actually use, generate one — the Music Studio's instrumental toggle produces a track with no vocals to strip.

Try the no-upload version

The quickest test is the file you have open right now: drop it on the free vocal remover, wait for the model to load once, and download both stems as WAV. No account, no queue, nothing leaves your machine — and if what you wanted was an instrumental you own outright, the Music Studio makes one from a prompt with 150 starter credits on a free account.
